Suriname Bauxite Strike Spreads to 3 Banks

Employees of three commerical banks have joined a month-old bauxite workers’ strike in a widening protest over the military government’s tax policies.

Lieut. Col. Desi Bouterse, who took power in a 1980 coup, charged that the strike was organized by dissidents in exile in the Netherlands, including former President Henk Chin A Sen and former Prime Minister Andre Maakmat.
