Suriname Reports Sabotage By Striking Bauxite Workers

The Government said today that striking bauxite workers had damaged transmission lines and tried to drain oil from an electric transformer.

It said the sabotage Tuesday came as the bauxite workers and striking bank employees renewed their protest against higher income taxes scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1.

The Government press agency did not estimate the amount of damage.

The agency said officials had written the Suriname Aluminum Company and the General Bank of the Netherlands, reminding them of their obligations to the South American nation.

The president of the Paranam Workers Union, Fred Derby, told reporters today that the striking workers were under the erroneous impression that the union had cooperated with the Government in raising taxes. He called on the workers to end the strike and let the union protect their interests.
