Subject: CBI B WGNation Criteria: Additional Information on Suriname

REF: STATE 299562

  1. GOS subsidies to rice growers are in the form of guaranteed minimum prices which GOS adjusts periodically. A Surinamese rice grower receives the difference, if any, between the GOS guaranteed price and the purchaser’s price. This relates to Section 212(c) KTL of the CBI legislation criteria.
  2. GOS Ministry of Justice informed CONOFF that Suriname adheres to the Berne Convention on the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (September 9, 1886) and does not require individual registration of copyrights. GOS Justice Ministry has a Bureau of Industrial Property which regulates trademarks: foreign firms with local representatives can register trademarks in about one week; validity of trademark registration is twenty years. This relates to Section 212(c)(9) of CBI legislation criteria.
