Chin A Sen seeking support from U.S.
She proudly announced that she aroused the interest of Jack Wheelock, “the Indiana Jones among freedom fighters,” who is said to be in Suriname at this moment. Wheelock visited in recent years “anti-Soviet liberation movements” in Nicaragua, Afghanistan, and Angola and reported on his adventures in the Washington Times. This newspaper has devoted more attention than other U.S. newspapers to developments in Suriname, although not always accurately, and it tends to emphasize the presence of Libyan advisers who are said to be helping to maintain a “Marxist dictatorship.”
The Washington Times is owned by the Moon sect, a religious movement founded by the Korean, which aims to fight communism around the world. The Washington Times has its own institute to acquire funds for the Contras (the Freedom Fund) and maintains close ties through its political umbrella organization CAUSA with other groups which are active in Central and Latin America. Chin A Sen, Jozefzoon and Wijngaarde are invited to lunch on March 27 with CAUSA/The Washington Times. Wijngaarde commented: “There is nothing wrong with that. It never dawned upon NRC Handelsblad to invite us to lunch.”
Chin A Sen is not inclined to name other organizations he is talking to, but it is a fact that there have been earlier contacts on behalf of Brunswijk with the retired General John Singlaub, expert on special operations and former CIA commander. Singlaub is currently the head of a series of study groups, action committees and foundations, including the World Anti-Communist League, and is, or was, a member of government-installed advisory committees on fighting terrorism and the Central America policy. He was asked by the White House to coordinate the acquisition and transfer of private aid to the Contras, to which effect he cooperated with Oliver North, referred to by Judy Bashore as “our hero Oliver North.”
There is no doubt that support for a liberation movement in Suriname or even an intervention like the one in Grenada fits into President Reagan’s foreign policy, if one assumes that Suriname is “a communist bridgehead” in Latin America. After all, the Reagan Doctrine says that isolation of a country where a Marxist regime is in power is not enough; military pressure, at least in the form of support for “covert action,” is then required. Robert Gates, CIA Deputy Director, recently named Suriname in an article in the Washington Times as one of the countries that could qualify for covert support for anti-communist elements.
However, Democratic Senator Patrick Moynihan named Suriname in the New York Times as an example of a country the U.S. would do better not get involved in, because government and Congress have more important matters to attend to.
Apart from some fanatic activists, this opinion is shared by most political observers in Washington. Timothy Ashby, expert of Caribbean affairs at the Heritage Foundation, is of the same opinion.
