Citation to Accompany the William J. Donovan Award TM to Major General John K. Singlaub, USA (Ret.)

Major General John K. Singlaub’s legendary thirty-five year career with the United States Government was one of sustained achievement in ardu ous and sensitive command and leadership positions. His service with the United States Army, the Office of Strategic Services, the Central Intelli- gence Agency, and the United Nations Command, Korea, was marked by dedication, duty, bravery and patriotism.

Upon graduating from the ROTC at UCLA as a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, he volunteered for parachute duty. He was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services and was selected for the OSS-SOE Jedburgh program in Scotland, forerunners of today’s U.S. Special Forces. His three man team parachuted into Nazi occupied France where he organized, trained and led a French Resistance unit. From France he volunteered to go to OSS China where he led a U.S.-Chinese commando force against Japanese forces along the Indo-China border. Before the Japanese surrender, General Singlaub led an OSS team on to Hainan Island, rescuing 400 Allied prisoners of war. Following World War II, he served as the chief of the U.S. Military Liaison Mission in Mukden, Manchuria until he was forced to leave by the Chinese Communists in 1948

During the Korean War, he served with distinction as CIA deputy chief of station and as a battalion commander with the Third Infantry Divi- sion. He served in Vietnam as commander of the Joint Unconventional Warfare Task Force (MAC SOG). General Singlaub was assistant division commander of the 8th Infantry Division in Germany and chief of staff, United Nations Command, U.S. Forces, Korea. He was the United Nations Command’s senior military member of the Military Armistice Commission at Panmunja, Korea. General Singlaub was instrumental in the creation of the Ranger Training Center at Fort Benning, Georgia. He also was responsible for the combat readiness of the Army Reserve and National Guard units in a ten-state area and was a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

General Singlaub’s thirty-five years of distinguished service to our Nation was recognized by the thirty-three military decorations awarded to him including two Purple Hearts and combat decorations from six foreign countries.

General Singlaub is a graduate of the US. Army Command and General Staff College and the Air War College. He is a qualified rotary wing aviator.

Since retirement, General Singlaub has traveled extensively, lecturing on many national security issues. Among many honors, he has as honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Yeungnam University, the VFW National Armed Forces Award, the Truman Reagan Freedom Award, the George Washington Military Leadership Award and the UCLA Distinguished Service Award. He was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame and is a Distinguished Member of the First Special Forces Regiment.

General Singlaub’s singular accomplishments are in keeping with the highest traditions of the US. Army, the Office of Strategic Services and the legacy and leadership of General William J. Donovan.
