SUBJECT: Press Report on Das Bosworth Visit to Suriname

During his January 14-15 visit to Suriname, DAS for Interamerican Affairs Bosworth met with Foreign Minister Harvey Naarendorp. According to local press reports, one major focus of the talks was the status of the Caribbean Basin Initiative. Bilateral issues were also reportedly discussed, including plans for the negotiation of a bilateral air agreement and the USG offer to fund an Army Corps of Engineers study of certain harbors and waterways in Suriname.

According to Naarendorp, Das Bosworth stated that he considered Suriname to be a “friendly” country and that he could respect Suriname’s non-aligned policy although he did not understand all of Suriname’s policy decisions. Bosworth is reported to have stated that he had no problems with Suriname’s socialism “as long as it was not intended for export.” Naarendorp, in turn, stated that Suriname welcomes respect and support for its efforts to improve its social and economic systems but will reject all attempts to frustrate that process.
