Reaction of Surinamers in the Netherlands to Coup

F-1988-00163

  1. Embassy FSN has reported that Surinamese organizations in the Netherlands are organizing to express their reactions to the recent coup. According to Dutch journalists, LOSON (country-wide organization of Surinamers in Holland), a leftist organization linked to the Volkspartij, has organized a mass meeting to take place in Holland on February 29.
Loson will protest the appointment of Mr. Eddy Bruma as the formateur of the civilian council and is rallying around the cry of “Stop Eddy Bruma.”
The Surinamese Action Committee of the Bijlmermeer, an area of Holland where many Surinamers live, plans to hold a protest meeting at the Binnenhof on Tuesday, March 4th, during the debate in the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament over the situation in Suriname.
  2. Action requested: Embassy comments would be appreciated. Please keep post informed of activities of these Surinamese groups, particularly concerning their reactions to the military coup.
  3. FYI: Embassy FSN has received a report that a Dutch merchant requested 10,000 copies of “De Ware Tijd” of Tuesday, February 26, carrying news and photos of the coup. Apparently, only 3,600 copies were available for shipment to Holland, where they were selling for 2 guilders a copy.
