Suriname Coup SITREP 2

F-2012-32744

REF: PARAMARIBO 0251 (NOTAL)

  1. Best reports we have are that coup is being conducted by army and police units and that it is near success or has succeeded. However, things are still far from clear.
  2. Names that are connected with the coup leadership are Police Commissioner Vrij; Military Police Head Lt. Abrahams; Police Inspector Leeflang, NMR member; Army Lt. Nankoessing; Army sergeants A. Goree and Wilfred Hawker; and former Army Lt. Rambocus.
  3. Hawker was tried in 1981 for alleged coup attempt and had been in jail. Rambocus was forced to resign from army after Feb 1980 coup because of his past ‘old order’ associations. We heard his name earlier in connection with possible coup, see reftel.
  4. We still are unable to account reliably for military leaders Bouterse, Horb, or Fernandes.
  5. At 0930 local time radio Radika announced that a Freedom Council was in control. No details followed. Other stations continue on air but broadcast music only.
