SUBJECT: Suriname Coup SITREP 8: Hawker Captured

  1. C – Entire text.
  2. At 0845 local time, television station broadcast two brief taped segments. First showed Sgt. Hawker lying on stretcher with hands bound and bandage prominent on upper left chest. In response to questioning by interviewer, he said he was not an originator of this coup but had been forced to join, but now realized that much of the army was still loyal to the military authority (Bouterse, Horb). Hawker called for the Rambocus troops to surrender in order to avoid further bloodshed.
  3. This interview was followed immediately by taped interview of Garrison Commander Horb, who said the National Army was in control of Fort Zeelandia and called for all loyal troops to report to Fort Zeelandia. He admitted that the Rambocus faction still held Memre Boekoe barracks but said he believed that the National Army, with the support of the loyal public, would be able to overcome this problem.
  4. Comment: The relative military strength of the two opposing factions is unclear. However, it appears that the military authority are still in control of Fort Zeelandia and at least some portion of the army, while Rambocus controls Memre Boekoe Kaserne. It is also unclear who will take the next initiative, but it is likely that Bouterse will now consolidate his forces to move on the barracks at Memre Boekoe. There is sporadic gunfire in the vicinity of Memre Boekoe at this time.
