Volunteered Press Statement – Noon Press Briefing, March 7

F-1988-00163

The Department’s press spokesman volunteered the following statement at the end of the noon press briefing on March 7:

BEGIN TEXT:
The USG continues to be concerned over the violent actions taken in Suriname on February 25 and the postponement of the elections scheduled for March 7. The USG has been encouraged by President Ferrier’s willingness to remain as Chief of State and to use his influence to continue constitutional government and preserve democracy in Suriname. We fully support these efforts.

The USG wishes to express the view that the people of Suriname are fortunate to have a man of Ferrier’s dedication, statesmanship, and probity in their service.

END TEXT.
