World Bank – Economic Memorandum on Suriname

This report is based on the findings of an economic mission to Suriname in June-July 1979 consisting of Constance Bernard, Mission Chief, Jessica Mott, Young Professional, and Raghuveer Pasupulati, National Accounts Specialist.

Since the preparation of the economic report on Suriname, there has been a change in Government. As a consequence, this report may not fully reflect the economic policies and development priorities of the present Government.

This 1980 World Bank economic memorandum on Suriname analyzes the country’s economic performance since its independence in 1975, focusing on the bauxite sector’s dominance, the role of Dutch development aid, and the need for economic diversification. The report highlights the challenges of expanding the export base, improving public sector savings, and generating employment amid labor force growth and potential emigration limitations. It also assesses the government’s development plans and the constraints hindering their implementation, including the slow rate of public sector investment and the need for private sector engagement.
