  1. (U) February 23 television news and next morning’s edition of daily “De Ware Tijd” carried brief announcements of further developments in cases of former ministers Hardjoprajitno and Sariman, who were taken into custody on January 30 along with Major Roy Horb and 18 others on charges of involvement in assassination plot against Bouterse and other military leaders (Ref A).
  2. (U) According to news reports, Hardjoprajitno is now under arrest after confessing to involvement in plot. Confession came after he was confronted with statements from others involved, but no details were given. Sariman was reportedly released due to insufficient evidence.
  3. (C) Comment: This is only second, brief, update issued by GOS concerning arrests of these two ministers. Release of Sariman due to insufficient evidence may be viewed by GOS as means to persuade populace that it is adhering to legal norms in its handling of case. Similarly, attempt was made to prove that Major Horb’s death in prison was suicide, by televising police reconstruction of events surrounding his death (Ref C).
